Modeling Empathy

em·pa·thy
ˈempəTHē/
noun
  1. the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

According to some studies empathy is on the decline among young people. Recent "research, led by Sara H. Konrath of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and published online in August in Personality and Social Psychology Review, found that college students’ self-reported empathy has declined since 1980, with an especially steep drop in the past 10 years."

You have a three options for this post.
  1. Research what is contributing to this phenomena. READ THE SOURCE and summarize it for us. You must also include a link. -5 without a source. Tell us why empathy is important.
  2. Look at the video one of the two examples listed below and tell us about it in your own words. Did the example move you? Why? Why is empathy important to you?
  3. Describe an example from your own life where you or someone you know displayed empathy in a way that moved you. Why is empathy important in your own words?

  1. The example of the student holding the door for people did move me in a positive way because it shows how one simple act can change your life. Putting myself in the students shoes I felt bad at first since he was being bullied, at the end it made me feel good in how everyone was in a positive way because of one simple act.

  2. This is a true story, when I was around 7, my grandma fainted because she appeared to have diabetes. My mom sat with my grandma in the hospital all night because my grandma had to be looked after and my mom was really worried. But now my grandma is okay and she is on a goal to have less pain and less high sugar occurring. To me, it just shows that some try to have good health and set goals to it, but we aren't as appreciative about it as we think we are......

  3. For example 2, their was an 11 years boy named Bo who was diagnosed with Autism and one day he was sitting by himself at lunch and a college football player named Travis Rudolph decided to with the boy and It was such a loving and moving moment. Empathy is important to me because we don't understand what people and show show we do we can show empathy towards them.

  5. When I was younger I found a wallet in a Shop rite parking lot. I thought this person would be super panic since she lost her wallet with all her information inside and important card. It took 2 days to find her but I returned it she didn't say thank you.... But I think she was super excited to get her wallet back. I think if I didn't have empathy she wouldn't have gotten her wallet and someone would have stolen it and use her information.

  6. An example of me showing empathy is in my old school, there was a very quiet girl in my class who always sat by herself and and who looked sad at lunch. I began sitting with her and became really close with her and even introduced her to all of my friends. She and I were so close but of course all good things come to an end. We stopped being friends but if she ever needed anything from me I would be there to help. Empathy is very important to me because one small act of kindness can help someone out in a very big way. If I hadn't began talking to her she would have a very bad middle school experience and that isn't very nice.

  7. An example of empathy in my life is I saw my cousin stand up for a kid who was being bullied. Before he would never talk to the person and sometimes make fun of that person. But he realized the things he said was terrible and he decided to stop and be nicer to the student and became friends. I think empathy is important because you put yourself in the same situation and realize that you wouldn't want the same thing to happen to you.

  8. One example of empathy that I've shown in my life is one day I one of my friends looked very bummed out the whole day. At first, I didn't want to ask her anything because she might've thought I was being nosy. Once I got home, I finally asked and she told me that she's very sad and that she doesn't really talk with her parents like how she use to. So, I had a very deep conversation with her on expressing herself to her parents and she came to realization with opening up more. I believe that empathy is very important because it gives a sense of feeling what a person is going through. Basically like walking a mile in their shoes.

  9. In example one it talked about a boy who being bullied for missing his dad and after awhile when he was in a new school who did something so that people knew about him and so people could appreciate him. The video did move me because even though it was small gesture it taught the school to appreciate the smallest things. Empathy is important to me because we cant understand others feelings, so once in awhile its nice to let it out and relate to everyone

  11. I think sympathy is good. But when I was young, I sympathizeD a woman who held her child begging money on the road. Being sympathetic. I gave her some. My mother said it was good to be sympathiveing to others, but now a lot of people take advantage of everyone's sympathy abducted orphans pull the street pretending to be their children to get money. For that I feel bad.

  12. I think empathy is important because it makes you open your eyes on how others feel. Like how it feels to be bullied, how it feels to be the bully. It makes you more aware.
